Selecting a medication
All the medications displayed have corresponding indications in the underlying client-configured formulary that align with the patient inputs.
Please note: this stage does not appear in an in-order launch, when Touchdose is launched in the context of a medication.
List of medications
The list of medications is presented in a table view, and each medication is accompanied by corresponding source(s). When you click on a medication you will be taken to the select indication screen where you will be presented for the indications that can be treated with the selected medication.
Above the table on the right, there is a search bar specifically for searching medications (excluding the source). The search term doesn't need to match the beginning of the medication but can match any consecutive part. For example, searching for "purinol" will return Allopurinol as an option.
Touchdose does not provide information indicating whether medications must be prescribed at a product-level which specifies the specific medicinal form of the medications, for example a 500 mg Paracetamol tablet. The determination of this choice is left to the prescribing clinician. Underlying formularies may include preferred formulation data, which is exposed when present.
All dose and rate quantities provided by Touchdose will include a route and method of administration. The responsibility lies with the clinician prescribing the medication to specify an appropriate medicinal form based on the medication, route of administration and the patient's condition when necessary.
Specific medicinal products
The list of medications will include generic medications like Hydrocortisone, and in some instances, it may also include specific medicinal products such Hydrocortisone as Hydrocortistab®. Only the specific medicinal products from the underlying client-specific formulary that are valid for prescription based on the patient inputs will be displayed.
Sources
Each medication in the table will have one of more source. Touchdose supports dosing recommendations from multiple formularies or content sources, therefore, it is possible for content for the same medication to come from different sources. In such cases, the medication will be displayed on one row with multiple sources.
In most instances, the source will have an associated URL that links to the source content. If the clinician clicks on a linked source, Touchdose will open the URL in a web browser. Sources have a link out icon if there is an associated URL.
Commonly used medications
When commonly used medications have been configured, they will be clearly marked and prioritised to the top of the list. See the figure below for how commonly used medications may appear in Touchdose:
Tags
Tags can be used to add additional information to the medications shown in the medication table — for example flagging that a medication is a controlled drug or is subject to a prescribing restriction. Every tag that applies to the medication is shown alongside the medication name.
If a tag includes additional detail, clicking on it will display that information. In some cases, this view may also include a link to further information; if so, a button will be shown that allows you to open the link in a new tab.
In other scenarios, a tag may contain only a link and no additional detail. In this case, clicking the tag will immediately open the external URL, and an icon will indicate that it will take you outside the system.
Finally, if a tag has no additional detail and no associated link, it will be displayed as a non-clickable label.
